Don’t Make THIS Brand Photoshoot Prop Mistake!

Want to know the secret to not being awkward in photos? Props.

Sure, posing and direction from your photographer play a large part in looking relaxed and natural, but forget diamonds; props are a girl’s best friend.

All too often, I see brand photoshoot props that
clearly aren’t in line with the brand’s identity. The props are off-brand, not realistic, and throw far too many colors into the mix.

Don’t make this prop mistake in your brand photoshoot!

To help you get into a brand-aware mindset, think of your brand photos as an extension of your logo.  If you printed the images on your business card, would they make sense?

Planning your brand photoshoot props is an integral part of your overall content plan. Not only will strategic props help you look natural in photos if thoughtfully planned, but they can also help you stand out from your competition!

Why? They show what is unique about you, and those unique qualities make you relatable.

The best part? Thinking your props through ahead of time will give you photo ideas (to add to your must-have shot list) and allow you to write captions for those photos more easily!

5 Prompts to Help Plan Your brand photoshoot Props

Grab your notepad and get to brainstorming!

Remember: Stay true to yourself; inauthenticity shows!

Step 1: Think through your business needs

What items do you use every day for your business? What do you keep on your desk?

Brainstorm Ideas (by business type):

General:

  • Computer
  • Phone
  • Paper notebook or journal

Service-based:

  • “Clients” (yes, people are props too!)
  • Consultations
  • Products you use in your service
  • Pamphlets or books you give your clients
  • Client gifts

Product-based:

  • Your product
  • Packaging
  • Shipping materials
  • Ways you communicate with vendors (is it primarily online or do you meet with them in person?)
  • How you store your products
  • Think through your business process from creation to purchasing to shipment

Step 2: Consider your brand identity

What is your brand identity? What is your brand personality? What 3 words would you use to describe your brand’s aesthetic?

(Not sure? Check out “How to Nail Down Your Personal Brand”)

Brainstorm Ideas:

  • Colors
  • Style
  • Themes (plants, dots, lines, etc)
  • Light and bright or dark and moody

Step 3: Get personal

What are your daily rituals and routines?

Brainstorm Ideas:

  • What do you do in the mornings and evenings throughout the week?
  • What do you do for fun on the weekends?
  • What is a thing that is inherently YOU? (ex. I am constantly carrying around my Bama water cup)
  • Favorite flower
  • Favorite drink
  • Favorite TV show
  • Favorite book
  • Favorite meal

Step 4: your immediate photo needs

What images do you need right now for your business?

Brainstorm Ideas:

  • A hero image for your website home page?
  • Headshots for profile pictures?
  • Fluff images for Instagram posts or website freebies?

Step 5: Consider upcoming projects

What upcoming projects do you have that will need specific imagery?

Brainstorm Ideas:

  • Plan ahead for future PDFs that may require custom stock imagery.
  • Do you have a celebratory post coming up?
  • Any special holidays you need an image for?

Did you get all of that? Did any creative must-have shot ideas run through your head?

I hope you wrote them down!
